a•pe•ri•od•ic in Boston: an evening of Experimental Music at Goethe Institut Boston

Chicago’s critically acclaimed experimental music ensemble,a•pe•ri•od•ic, makes its first appearance on the East coast with a performance at Boston’s Goethe Institut featuring music written for the ensemble by Wandelweiser composers Jürg Frey and Michael Pisaro, along with works by Catherine Lamb, Kunsu Shim, and Nomi Epstein.

Specializing in notated, acoustic, experimental music, a•pe•ri•od•ic‘s repertoire explores the indeterminacy of various musical elements including instrumentation, structure, pitch, and/or duration. Drawn to works of sparseness, contemplation, and quietude, this "daring group" (Chicago Reader) has a history of interpreting distinctive pieces using a collaborative rehearsal process, deriving meaning and intention from oblique prose scores with great sensitivity.

Program
Jürg Frey: Fragile Balance (commissioned by a•pe•ri•od•ic, 2014)
Nomi Epstein: combine, juxtapose, delayed overlap (2013/2017)
Kunsu Shim: Happy for no reason (2000)
Michael Pisaro: festhalten/loslassen (commissioned by a•pe•ri•od•ic, 2013)
Catherine Lamb: line/shadow (2011)

a•pe•riod•ic (48): The Music of Clara de Asís and Gabriela Areal with Clara de Asís solo set

a•pe•riod•ic presents a double portrait concert

Opening for the concert will be a solo set by CLARA DE ASÍS

Our first concert of the season, a double portrait concert featuring two composers working at the intersection of composition and improvisation with interest in focused listening practices:

Gabriela Areal, an Argentinian composer, cellist, and curator of the SAGITAL series, and Clara de Asís, a Spanish composer, percussionist, and sound artist based in France. Juxtaposing mini-portraits of these two and exhibiting their scores in concert, will show similarities and differences in notational, aesthetic, and performance approaches.

We are thrilled that CLARA DE ASÍS will be in residence for the concert, and will perform a solo opening set on the concert.

This concert is supported by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain.
